An 18-year-old kayaker tragically lost his life in Florida after being struck by lightning while on the Blackwater River in Santa Rosa County, approximately 170 miles west of Tallahassee. The incident occurred on Sunday as Michael Aidan Vargas was accompanied by his father and individuals from the Navy’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program.
Despite efforts from his father and others present, Vargas fell into the water and could not be rescued. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was alerted at 12:25 pm and joined in the search for his body. Dive teams combed the river until eventually locating Vargas.
In a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, Vargas’s sister Marissa mourned his passing, describing him as her guardian angel and expressing gratitude for the time they shared. She encouraged sharing memories of Vargas and pledged to honor his life always.
The family requested support or donations be directed to Daphne Search and Rescue, as the FWC offered condolences to Vargas’s loved ones. This tragedy marks the second reported lightning fatality in the U.S. for 2026, with the National Lightning Safety Council noting an average of 17 lightning-related deaths annually since 2016.
