A British soldier, identified as Lance Corporal James Freeman from the Royal Anglian Regiment, passed away in a training incident in Iraq. The tragic event occurred at an air base in Erbil, a region in northern Iraq where the US military operates. Alongside the British soldier, an American service member also lost their life during the same incident, as confirmed in a tweet by the US Army.
The Ministry of Defence disclosed that the fatal accident took place on Sunday, May 31, 2026, during routine training under Operation Shader, the UK’s anti-Islamic State campaign. Lance Corporal Freeman, a seasoned and dedicated soldier, had served in various locations including South Sudan, Cyprus, the Falklands, and more.
The MoD expressed condolences to Freeman’s family and highlighted his commitment as a family man who always prioritized his loved ones. Defence Secretary John Healey conveyed deep sadness over the loss and extended sympathy to Freeman’s relatives and colleagues.
Lieutenant Samuel Frost, Freeman’s Platoon Commander, praised him as an outstanding soldier and expressed profound sorrow over his passing. Corporal William Thorpe described Freeman as his closest companion, acknowledging his professionalism and unwavering support.
The identity of the American soldier involved in the incident has not been revealed yet.
