A Member of Parliament from the Labour Party is taking legal action against a tech company owned by Elon Musk after an AI tool was used to create fake images of her in a bikini, causing her humiliation. Jess Asato became a target following her criticism of the chatbot Grok, which was misused to generate inappropriate images of women and children.
The online community manipulated photos of Asato using the xAI-operated tool, resulting in a deepfake image of her in a bikini and a disturbing video depicting a simulated assault scenario. As a prominent figure working on combating violence against women and girls, the MP for Lowestoft condemned the misuse of technology, citing other distressing instances such as deepfake pornography and offensive image alterations.
Expressing her discontent, Asato revealed her decision to file a legal claim against xAI, the company linked to Grok, for allowing the creation of demeaning content without her consent. She emphasized the need for proper safeguards in AI tools to prevent such abuses and protect vulnerable individuals.
The legal case, submitted at the High Court, focuses on the design flaw of the Grok chatbot that facilitated the manipulation of Asato’s images. If successful, the lawsuit could establish a crucial precedent regarding liability for the design of AI systems. Asato aims to spark a conversation about consent in the digital realm through her actions.
Ravi Naik, representing Asato, stressed the importance of holding AI developers accountable for harmful outcomes, emphasizing the need for proactive safety measures in technology design. The Grok scandal, which sparked global outrage, prompted regulatory actions to address the proliferation of sexualized deepfakes on Musk’s platform.
Following pressure from various quarters, xAI pledged to comply fully with UK laws, responding to concerns raised by public figures like Keir Starmer and Liz Kendall. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges in regulating AI technologies and protecting individuals from digital exploitation.
