A nurse, Pauline Thornton, who dedicated her life to assisting others, saved four individuals through the selfless act of organ donation following her passing. Pauline, aged 62, had served at Hull University Teaching Hospitals for 42 years. She generously donated her heart, kidneys, and liver after succumbing to a brain haemorrhage in February. In honor of her legacy, staff members are organizing a fundraising climb of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough to support the NHS Blood and Transplant Charity and Hull Help for Refugees.

Pauline’s daughter, Claire Thornton, a nurse in Hull as well, emphasized her mother’s lifelong spirit of generosity, stating that even in death, Pauline continued to extend help to others. Commencing her nursing career in Hull in 1984, Pauline initially worked as a scrub nurse in the theatres at Hull Royal Infirmary and later held the position of charge nurse at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham. Despite opting for flexible retirement in 2019, she continued her service as a scrub nurse in pediatric theatres at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital.

Alongside her nursing career, Pauline dedicated time to volunteering at Hull Help for Refugees, where she was known for sharing the produce from her allotment with colleagues. Claire expressed her desire to raise awareness about the profound impact of organ donation by sharing her mother’s story.

Janine Tate, a specialist nurse in organ donation at Hull United Teaching Hospitals, underscored the family’s decision to donate as a reflection of Pauline’s lifelong dedication to helping others. The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign led to the introduction of opt-out legislation on organ donation in 2020, aiming to enhance transplantation opportunities.

The new legislation, inspired by Spain’s successful organ donation model, could potentially pave the way for innovative organ reconditioning techniques. Profusion, a groundbreaking method pioneered in Newcastle upon Tyne, has the potential to significantly increase the number of life-saving transplants annually, including liver, lung, and kidney transplants.

In May 2020, England adopted an opt-out system for organ donation following the Change the Law for Life campaign. This legislation presumes individuals in England to be donors unless they choose to opt out, with consent from loved ones always being prioritized before donation.
