Russia has initiated a devastating series of lethal assaults on Ukraine, causing significant damage in several major cities and resulting in the deaths of a minimum of 11 individuals. Under the command of Vladimir Putin, Russian forces carried out an onslaught involving 73 missiles and 656 drones targeting Kyiv, Dnipro, and other eastern cities like Poltava, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia. This assault, one of the most extensive by Moscow in recent times, left numerous people injured, including children.
The impacted regions were filled with air sirens as Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept and neutralize 40 missiles and 602 drones. This offensive follows Moscow’s threat of “systematic strikes” in response to what it claimed was an attack by Kyiv on a student dormitory in Eastern Ukraine, resulting in 21 casualties last week.
Russia justified its latest attack as a response to alleged “terrorist acts” by Ukraine against Russian targets, also stating that Ukrainian military installations were hit. The Russian defense ministry reported that the Russian armed forces conducted a significant strike using high-precision long-range weapons in retaliation to Kyiv’s actions.
Distressing visuals illustrated residential and commercial structures ablaze as inhabitants, including parents and children, navigated debris outside their ruined homes across Ukraine. In Kyiv alone, four individuals perished, and 63 sustained injuries, with three being children. Approximately 140,000 residents in Kyiv were left without power post the onslaught.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko of Kyiv mentioned a fire erupting in a nine-story apartment building due to flaming debris falling from a nearby missile-hit structure. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, at least six people died and 36 were injured from Russian strikes on Dnipro, with an emergency worker losing his life during a subsequent attack.
Kharkiv witnessed at least 14 injuries as residential properties, garages, and vehicles suffered damage. Several individuals were trapped under debris following missile and drone strikes that demolished larger apartment buildings.
An elderly couple, Olena Dniprovska, 65, and Yevhen, 64, were injured in their Kyiv apartment during the assault, with Olena describing the chaos and destruction they faced. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a warning of a potential “massive” strike from Russia, emphasizing the readiness of Ukrainian defenders around the clock.
The situation remains tense as both countries navigate the aftermath of these tragic events.
