An Arsenal supporter who pledged not to trim his facial hair until his team claimed the league title has finally ended his decade-long vow. Rafal Goral, aged 45, recently shaved off his 57cm beard, feeling like he had lost a part of his identity after nurturing it since 2016.
The commitment was made in March of that year when Arsenal, under former manager Arsène Wenger, had endured a considerable title drought. Despite witnessing other teams, such as Leicester City, lift the trophy, Arsenal’s championship aspirations remained unfulfilled.
The devoted fan celebrated Arsenal’s recent triumph under Mikel Arteta by dyeing his beard red and shaving it during the club’s Premier League Title parade. Reflecting on the experience, Rafal, hailing from Chelmsford, Essex, expressed mixed emotions, stating that while he felt like a stranger to himself post-shave, he anticipated showing his new look to others.
Rafal admitted the difficulty of parting with his beard, acknowledging the emotional weight attached to the act. Despite his girlfriend’s disappointment, he stood by his word, surprising colleagues who doubted his resolve, especially those supporting rival team Spurs.
Having supported Arsenal for close to two decades, Rafal recounted how he made the pledge to stop shaving in a workplace filled with Spurs fans. Throughout the years, he endured skepticism and jests about resembling Gandalf but remained steadfast in his commitment, eventually honoring his promise following Arsenal’s league victory.
The journey, which Rafal thought would be shorter, spanned a decade, with the last three years being particularly challenging as he awaited Arsenal’s resurgence. While relieved to have fulfilled his pledge, Rafal acknowledged the bittersweet feelings that accompanied parting with his iconic beard.
