A train conductor was left injured after a passenger assaulted him for requesting to see his ticket. The incident occurred on a York-bound service when Peter Corley, 62, asked Finley Seggie, 21, and his companion to show valid tickets. Instead of complying, Seggie verbally attacked Corley and then physically punched him, resulting in Corley losing a tooth and incurring £3,000 in dental expenses. Subsequently, Seggie pleaded guilty to ABH and received a 16-month suspended sentence.
Corley, a former Lance Corporal in the army, had joined Northern Trains in 2018 after retiring from the West Yorkshire Police. The assault occurred during a routine ticket inspection on the Leeds to York service. Corley described the unexpected attack, stating he was shocked by Seggie’s aggressive behavior and was left bloodied and in need of medical attention.
Following the assault, Corley had to undergo dental treatment, which was covered by Northern Trains. However, the mental trauma from the incident led him to leave his job in May 2025. Currently, he works as a supermarket customer team member and delivery driver. Despite the challenges, Corley expressed gratitude towards Northern Trains for their support and emphasized the demanding nature of a ticket inspector’s role.
Seggie was apprehended in February 2026 after being identified through CCTV footage. Although he initially claimed self-defense, he later admitted to the charge of ABH. Corley, while satisfied with the legal outcome, expressed a desire for restorative justice, wishing to confront Seggie directly to understand the motive behind the assault.
