“Proposal to Ban Disruptive Air Passengers for Life”

A proposal is in the works to potentially impose lifetime bans on disruptive passengers who cause disturbances while under the influence on flights. This initiative aims to establish a public list of such individuals that airlines can share among themselves.

One of the strategies under consideration involves airlines receiving alerts if a passenger with a history of being rude, aggressive, or intoxicated tries to check in for a flight. Subsequently, the airline can take action, including preventing them from boarding any of their flights permanently.

Challenges around data protection regulations currently limit airlines from sharing passenger information. However, efforts are underway to address this issue. A potential system, still in its early stages, could involve airlines notifying authorities about disruptive passengers.

The government would then maintain a database of antisocial passengers and inform airlines if any individual on the list attempts to check in for another flight.

Scheduled discussions between officials and airlines in June will delve into advancing these proposed measures. Industry insiders reportedly offer broad support for these potential regulations.

A government source emphasized the need to curb antisocial behavior during flights, highlighting the safety risks it poses to passengers and crew, along with the disruption it causes to travel plans.

The suggested plan is anticipated to be implemented without requiring new legislation, with both the aviation industry and the government collaborating to establish and manage the framework, guidelines, and enforcement of any potential ban list.

Legal consequences, including criminal charges, already exist for disruptive passengers. Committing offenses such as being intoxicated on a plane can lead to imprisonment, hefty fines, or bearing the costs of flight diversions, which could exceed £10,000. Furthermore, such passengers may already face permanent bans from specific airlines.

The Civil Aviation Authority warns that intoxicated, rude, or unruly passengers not only distress cabin crew and fellow travelers but also endanger aircraft safety, potentially leading to flight diversions at the disruptive passengers’ expense.

Ryanair’s CEO previously suggested prohibiting alcohol service at airports in the early morning to address disruptive behaviors. The airline has also announced fines for passengers whose misconduct results in their removal from flights.

A spokesperson for Ryanair expressed concern over the inconvenience caused to passengers due to the misconduct of a single unruly individual.

Consumer magazine editor Rory Boland noted a rise in problematic behavior linked to excessive drinking at airports, causing disruptions for fellow passengers. He emphasized the need for stringent penalties for disorderly conduct during flights to ensure passenger safety.
