Police have apprehended a 27-year-old individual on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident where an officer was struck by a stolen police vehicle in Northern Ireland. The event occurred in the Model Farm estate in Downpatrick around 4:45 am on Sunday. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated that the officer sustained significant injuries but they are not considered life-threatening.
Authorities had initially tried to stop a vehicle in the Fountain Street area. The vehicle was later discovered in Ballymote Walk, where officers observed a man fleeing from it and pursued him towards Colmcille Road, according to reports from Belfast Live.
Police reported that upon returning to their vehicle, they found someone in the driver’s seat driving recklessly. Allegedly, the vehicle was driven directly at an officer, who discharged a shot before being hit.
Subsequently, the police vehicle was abandoned and the suspect fled the scene. The 27-year-old suspect was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody.
The injured officer received urgent medical attention at the scene from fellow officers, aided by members of the local community. The officer was then transported to the hospital by colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The police vehicle, the officer’s weapon, and ammunition were all retrieved and taken for forensic examination.
Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones remarked, “Officers face dangers daily to ensure public safety. They should not be attacked while carrying out their duties, and this incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks they encounter. Our thoughts are with the officer as he continues to receive medical care in the hospital, and we remain committed to supporting him and his family.”
She added, “The incident was undoubtedly frightening for the officer and his colleagues, with the potential for life-altering or fatal consequences. Actions were taken to defend lives and protect officers. Our Serious Crime branch detectives have launched an investigation into attempted murder, with inquiries ongoing.”
Individuals with information or footage related to the incident are urged to contact the police at 101, quoting reference number 317 31/05/26.
