A massive fire has destroyed a chicken farm in Cheshire, emitting a significant smoke plume over the area. Firefighters have mobilized ten fire engines to The Grange on Checkley Lane near Bridgemere. Nearby residents are advised to keep doors and windows shut due to the extensive smoke production, according to fire officials.

The fire ignited this morning around 6:30 am, and firefighting efforts have continued for over 12 hours. Startling photos released by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service depict a completely charred chicken shed spanning approximately four acres, equivalent to more than two football fields.

Motorists on the M6 and locals in the vicinity reported witnessing a large smoke column billowing from the site. One driver recounted tracking the immense smoke trail from the M6 and arriving at Betley Village Hall, describing the scene as a colossal smoke cloud.

Specialized equipment such as an aerial ladder platform, water bowser, and high-volume pumps have been utilized to combat the blaze. The fire department stated that firefighters are currently on site managing a substantial fire in an empty four-acre chicken shed on Checkley Lane, deploying multiple hose reels and main jets to suppress the flames and prevent further spread.

An update provided at 4 pm indicated that the operation has been downsized to two fire engines and the HRET appliance, with ongoing dampening activities at the scene. Firefighters are expected to remain present for an extended period.

Area Manager Aaron Collis of Cheshire Fire and Rescue reported that at 6:30 am, emergency crews responded to a significant fire at an unoccupied chicken shed in Checkley. At its peak, ten fire engines from Cheshire, supported by Staffordshire and Shropshire units, attended the scene, along with various specialized units. Although a major incident was initially declared due to the extensive smoke plume, it has since been lifted.

Collis praised the coordinated efforts of all emergency responders, noting substantial progress throughout the day. The incident has been partially contained, and collaboration with the site owners continues to ensure safe operations. Local residents were thanked for their understanding and cooperation during the smoke presence, with a reminder to keep doors and windows closed if affected.

A joint inquiry with Cheshire Constabulary will be initiated to determine the fire’s cause in the near future.
