A prison officer has avoided imprisonment after engaging in flirtatious communication with an inmate. Michaela Crawford exchanged text messages with prisoner Carl Catleugh discussing topics like first dates, heels, perfume, and future plans post his release. The unauthorized relationship was uncovered when an iPhone and charger concealed in a sock were discovered during a cell search at HMP Deerbolt in County Durham.
Evidence presented in Durham Crown Court revealed a series of inappropriate Snapchat and text exchanges between Crawford and Catleugh on the seized device. In one message, Catleugh expressed his fondness for Crawford, suggesting a potential relationship, to which Crawford responded eagerly about wearing heels and perfume on their first date.
Catleugh, currently 32 years old, pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited item in prison and received an eight-month suspended sentence along with 120 hours of community work. Crawford, aged 34, admitted to misconduct in public office during the period of August 20 to 22, 2024.
During the court session, Chris Baker, Crawford’s defense lawyer, acknowledged that the case warranted a custodial sentence but highlighted Crawford’s clean record, early admission of guilt, and the breach occurring over a brief period. Baker emphasized Crawford’s positive qualities, including community respect, diligence, and her departure from the Prison Service, citing improved mental health post her resignation.
Judge Mark McKone admonished Crawford for breaching the trust vested in her as a prison officer, allowing a prisoner to possess and use a phone for personal conversations that jeopardized her job and freedom. Despite acknowledging Crawford’s work ethic and parenting, McKone expressed disappointment in her prioritizing personal interests over professional duties. Crawford received a suspended 12-month sentence, with McKone noting her potential for rehabilitation and low likelihood of re-offending. She was mandated to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay a fine by September 1.
