French authorities have initiated a homicide inquiry following the discovery of a deceased 12-year-old boy with a towel wrapped around his neck in a city center, as per prosecutors. The child’s body was located on the banks of the Vilaine river in Rennes. The cause of death remains unclear, but the possibility of third-party involvement is being considered.

A fisherman heard a child’s cries near the river and alerted emergency services on Sunday afternoon. Despite efforts by firefighters, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy, who remains unidentified, had a wet towel tightly tied around his neck.

Police conducted examinations near a residential complex close to the river on Sunday evening. Local residents expressed shock at the incident, describing the neighborhood as normally quiet.
