A renowned tourist destination in Tenerife has been shut down due to elevated levels of harmful bacteria. La Pinta beach in Costa Adeje, part of the Canary Islands, has been cordoned off as authorities have labeled it a restricted area for swimming following the discovery of hazardous bacteria in the water.
Barriers have been installed along the seafront by the Adeje Town Hall as water samples are being assessed. Regular monitoring has identified microbiological levels associated with harmful enterococci bacteria, prompting the closure of the beach since May 14.
Although naturally occurring in human and animal intestines, this bacteria can lead to unpleasant illnesses. Swimming in contaminated water poses risks of stomach ailments, skin infections, eye issues, and respiratory problems. Red flags, barriers, and tape have been placed on the beach to discourage visitors from entering the water.
The beach, known for its popular inflatable assault course during the summer, will remain off-limits until the test results show the absence of harmful bacteria.
The news has left many individuals frustrated. Responses include expressions like, “Not again? This is disappointing,” and “What a pity.” Some have remarked on the challenges faced by numerous tourists.
This development coincides with the Government of the Canary Islands issuing a “pre-alert” for a current heatwave warning of soaring temperatures across the archipelago. In Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, temperatures may climb to or even surpass 37°C, particularly in inland regions in the southern part of the islands.
The official guidance advises people to seek shade and avoid consuming alcohol in extreme heat conditions. The alert for maximum temperatures, issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies, will take effect at 11 am.
Further warnings highlight potential temperatures exceeding 34°C in Gran Canaria’s inland areas and southern slopes facing south and west. Tenerife and La Gomera may experience temperatures above 32°C in midland regions and on south-facing slopes.
