Wes Streeting has announced plans to reinstate Sure Start centers to support families as he eyes the Labour leadership. The former Health Secretary aims to invest in the future of the next generation by reviving the original New Labour model, emphasizing care for children under 5 and expanding outreach efforts to engage more families. Streeting proposes funding this initiative through a wealth tax restructuring, potentially yielding up to £12 billion annually.

Despite Keir Starmer’s reluctance to step down, Streeting has commenced his campaign in the shadow leadership contest, while Andy Burnham seeks to return to Parliament through a by-election in Makerfield. Streeting, in his first post-Cabinet interview, highlighted the need for substantial investment to address the declining prospects faced by the younger generation.

Sure Start, a successful program under the previous Labour government, suffered cutbacks under Tory austerity measures. The current government introduced Best Start Family hubs to build on this legacy, offering support to families with children under 19. Streeting advocates for increased funding to elevate these services to previous Labour levels, emphasizing the importance of providing all children with equal opportunities.

Addressing constituents in Hainault, Streeting emphasized the Labour government’s commitment to securing a brighter future for all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Reflecting on his own upbringing, Streeting underscored the critical role of early education and family support in shaping his success.

While Streeting recently resigned following a confrontation with Keir Starmer, he refrained from triggering a leadership challenge, citing support for Andy Burnham’s potential candidacy. He warned against the risks of division within Labour and stressed the need for unity to prevent Nigel Farage from gaining political leverage.

Expressing a long-term vision, Streeting hinted at the possibility of rejoining the EU, contingent on a democratic mandate and public persuasion. He acknowledged the challenges of reversing Brexit but suggested a gradual approach to realigning Labour’s stance in anticipation of future elections.

In a candid interview, Streeting touched on his association with Peter Mandelson, emphasizing transparency and accountability in light of recent controversies. He criticized the prevailing culture of overlooking misconduct by powerful figures and stressed the importance of learning from past mistakes to foster a more inclusive and accountable political environment.
