In a surprising video clip, a newly-elected Reform councillor has openly admitted her lack of understanding of the council’s procedures and rules during a crucial meeting in Kirkless Council. Councillor Sarah Wood’s confession unfolded as the council convened for the first time since Reform UK gained dominance in the council. The moment of admission occurred as council members deliberated on her potential appointment as the council’s new leader in the midst of a hung council situation.

During the session, Cllr Wood candidly acknowledged her unfamiliarity with the council’s constitution, standing orders, and amendments, citing insufficient time to grasp these critical aspects. This revelation arose as her party, holding 29 seats, six short of a majority, aimed to thwart a coalition led by the Greens from taking control. Amid the political maneuvering, a proposal was made for a head-to-head vote between the Green councillor Andrew Cooper and Cllr Wood, necessitating the suspension of standing orders to facilitate a debate.

In response, Reform representatives criticized their opponents for exploiting the inexperience of new Reform councillors, highlighting a lack of comprehension among members. Cllr Wood stressed the importance of understanding the processes involved in decision-making to ensure a democratic process. Despite objections, the council eventually voted on the proposed head-to-head vote, which Reform reportedly opposed, leading to its defeat.

Following the contentious meeting, Independent councillor Tanisha Bramwell condemned the events as “appalling” and emphasized the need for competent leadership in the council to address previous shortcomings and negligence. She underscored the importance of having knowledgeable individuals in leadership roles to prevent adverse impacts on the community and essential services.

As the council looks to reconvene to elect a leader and determine the future direction of the authority, the incident has highlighted the significance of council members being well-versed in council procedures and responsibilities to effectively serve their constituents.
