The Royal British Legion is honoring individuals who served during the Iraq War today, commemorating 15 years since the conflict’s conclusion. The national event will pay tribute to the 179 Armed Forces members who lost their lives in Operation TELIC, over 6,000 who were wounded, and their families. Approximately 1,500 members of the Armed Forces community are expected to participate in the service titled “Remembering Iraq: 15 Years On” at the National Memorial Arboretum. The program includes wreath laying, readings, a Service of Remembrance, and a flypast by a Chinook helicopter.

The event will be attended by the Rt Hon John Healey MP, Secretary of State for Defence, and hosted by former ITV News war correspondent Bill Neely. Musical performances by mezzo-soprano Laura Wright and US singer Will Brown are also scheduled. WO1 Johnson Beharry VC, the recipient of the Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery in Iraq, will be present at the service.

Reflecting on his experiences, Beharry expressed the significance of remembering the sacrifices made by fellow soldiers. Similarly, Anna-Marie McDonald, whose father, Private Joseva Lewaicei, was killed in Iraq, emphasized the importance of events like this in connecting with her father’s legacy and honoring those who never returned home.

Another participant, Dr. Ziaur Rahman, highlighted the Royal British Legion’s support in his post-military life, particularly in dealing with PTSD and physical ailments. Mark Atkinson, Director General at the Royal British Legion, emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting veterans and their families, noting that the effects of service can manifest long after active duty.

As the nation’s hub for remembrance, the National Memorial Arboretum plays a vital role in ensuring that events like this continue to hold significance for current and future generations, fostering a sense of unity and respect for those who served in Iraq.
