Almost 700 airport workers in Edinburgh and Glasgow have voted in favor of taking industrial action during the busy summer holiday season, which includes the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Unite the union announced that specific strike dates will be revealed soon, with the action expected to impact both major events.

The dispute stems from ongoing pay disagreements, with approximately 370 Edinburgh Airport Limited employees and around 320 ICTS and Menzies Aviation workers in Glasgow supporting the strike. ICTS staff handle passenger interactions in security areas and assist with flight processing.

Unite’s general secretary, Sharon Graham, emphasized the strong backing for the strike among airport workers, attributing it to the employers’ reluctance to offer fair wages. She stated that the workers feel compelled to strike due to the companies prioritizing profits over employee compensation.

Responding to the situation, a Menzies Aviation spokesperson expressed disappointment at the industrial action plans, highlighting efforts to negotiate fairly amidst challenges from the Middle East conflict. The company mentioned consistent pay raises above inflation post-Covid, with the current proposal exceeding inflation rates and aligning with agreements made with other ground handlers in the region.

In anticipation of potential disruptions, Menzies Aviation assured the implementation of contingency plans to minimize any inconvenience to airline customers and passengers, ensuring that flights operate as scheduled. Similarly, Edinburgh Airport confirmed ongoing discussions with unions, including Unite, regarding pay matters, with further talks scheduled for the following week.

AGS Airports acknowledged the unfolding developments involving Unite, Menzies, and ICTS, expressing efforts to engage in dialogue to resolve the pay disputes and prevent disruptions to passengers’ travel plans.
