Police in Co Down, Northern Ireland, have issued a plea for information following an incident where two officers were deliberately struck by a vehicle. The officers, part of the Tactical Support Group from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), were on a mobile patrol on Killysorrell Road when they encountered a Ford Galaxy with faulty number plates. The officers, in an unmarked Skoda, pursued the vehicle to Villa Wood Road, where it suddenly reversed into their car. The Ford Galaxy then fled to Gowdystown Road, where it again reversed into the police vehicle before speeding away southbound on the A1 carriageway.
As a result of the deliberate collision, two officers sustained injuries requiring medical attention, and the police vehicle suffered frontal damage, necessitating repairs and temporarily taking it off duty. Inspector Rice expressed gratitude that the injuries were not severe but condemned the attack on officers working to ensure community safety. He emphasized the negative impact on police operations due to the damaged vehicle.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and anyone with information or relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage is urged to contact the police quoting reference number 601 20/05/26. Information can also be shared online through the PSNI website or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or their website.
