Britain is enjoying a scorching bank holiday heatwave, with temperatures expected to exceed 33C in the next 48 hours. This surge in warmth has attracted crowds to beaches, parks, and pub gardens as the sunny weather aligns perfectly with the start of the three-day weekend. The Met Office confirmed that the country has already experienced its hottest day of the year, with temperatures reaching 26.9C near Heathrow by midday.
However, not everyone is welcoming the heatwave, as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued warnings for vulnerable individuals, including those over 65 and individuals with existing cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. Amber health alerts have been issued in regions like the East Midlands, West Midlands, London, East of England, and South East, where significant impacts on health and social care services are anticipated due to the high temperatures. Yellow alerts have been issued for the rest of England.
Prior to the bank holiday weekend, travelers faced disruptions and delays on roads and railways. At the Port of Dover, holidaymakers endured waits of up to three hours, with some missing their scheduled ferry crossings due to chaos caused by new EU passport controls. Thousands of passengers were stuck in their vehicles in sweltering conditions, causing significant congestion at the port and on surrounding roads.
The heatwave has prompted beachgoers to flock to seaside destinations like Folkestone, with London experiencing some of the highest temperatures. Ice cream vans have made their appearance, signaling the start of the Great British Summer. From diving into the sea in Brighton to sunbathing and enjoying the beach weather, people are making the most of the summer heat. Tourists have been spotted along Blackpool’s promenade and on sightseeing tours along the River Thames, embracing the warm weather of the bank holiday weekend.
