The Met Office has provided guidance on staying cool as it anticipates potentially record-breaking high temperatures this Bank Holiday weekend in May.

According to the national weather agency, official heatwave conditions are expected across various regions from Saturday to Monday, with temperatures reaching up to 33C in some parts of the UK on Monday. Saturday could see highs of 30C, while Sunday is projected to reach 32C, as indicated by the Met Office.

With soaring temperatures on the horizon, individuals in the UK will be seeking ways to stay cool during the long weekend. The Met Office has shared a list of tips, including the recommendation to close curtains in rooms that receive direct sunlight to minimize heat.

Steve Kocher, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, mentioned that temperatures will rise, especially in southern regions where temperatures of 30C on Saturday and 32C on Sunday are likely. Monday is expected to be the peak day, with temperatures potentially hitting 33C in southern England and the Midlands.

It is anticipated that the UK’s May and Spring temperature records will probably be broken over the Bank Holiday weekend, surpassing the current record of 32.8C.

The upcoming hot spell is expected to trigger an official heatwave, which occurs when temperatures exceed the designated threshold for three consecutive days. The heatwave threshold varies from 25C to 28C in different regions, and this weekend is predicted to surpass it.

The Met Office forecasts that heatwave conditions may be achieved in parts of the south-east on Sunday, with the likelihood of spreading to central and western England and parts of Wales.

While some areas will experience intense heat, other regions may see more cloud cover and showers. Mr. Kocher noted that Northern Ireland and western Scotland may have increased cloudiness and showers, with the possibility of sea fog along western coastlines due to cooler sea temperatures.
