London Bus Driver Dies After Bus Stop Assault

An on-duty bus driver passed away after an alleged assault occurred while the bus was stationed at a bus stop during the early hours of Monday morning.

Sergei Krajev tragically lost his life on Tuesday following an assault on Battersea Bridge in London early Monday. His grieving family honored him as a remarkable husband, father, and grandfather.

Police responded to the incident at 00:33hrs on Monday, 18 May, providing immediate first aid to the 64-year-old Transport for London bus driver. Despite medical efforts, Sergei Krajev succumbed to his injuries. Specialist officers are assisting his family.

Gary Jones, 32, from Hospital Bridge Road, Twickenham, was apprehended at the scene and charged with causing severe bodily harm. He appeared in Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court and remains in custody until the next hearing at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, 15 June.

Detective Inspector Sarah Lee, leading the inquiry, expressed condolences to Sergei’s loved ones, friends, and coworkers. She assured the community and transport network workers of the ongoing collaboration with Transport for London to investigate the incident.

The family of Sergei praised him as a compassionate and dedicated individual, both in his personal life and as a bus driver. They appreciated the support from law enforcement, healthcare providers, and emergency services, extending sympathy to other public transport workers affected by the tragic news.

Transport for London’s Siwan Hayward expressed deep sorrow over Mr. Krajev’s passing, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding staff and passengers from all forms of violence. She reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards aggression and violence, ensuring a safe environment for all commuters and employees.
