A tragic incident unfolded in north-west Spain, where a two-year-old girl passed away after being inadvertently left inside a van by her father who forgot to drop her off at nursery. The toddler was subjected to soaring temperatures as the vehicle quickly heated up due to the 25C weather. Her father, preoccupied by a phone call after dropping off his older child at school, proceeded to work without realizing his youngest was still in the van. This heartbreaking event occurred in Brion, A Coruña, Galicia.

Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact sequence of events. Initial reports suggest that the 29-month-old child spent several hours inside the vehicle before succumbing to the extreme conditions. The child’s mother raised the alarm upon realizing her absence at the nursery during the afternoon pickup.

Despite efforts to resuscitate her at the Bertamirans Urgent Care Centre, the child could not be saved and was pronounced dead. Medical professionals attribute her cause of death to severe dehydration and heatstroke.

The Civil Guard is actively investigating the incident, with the Santiago Territorial Judicial Police Team leading the inquiry. The family is receiving support from the Psychological Intervention Group in Catastrophes and Emergencies (GIPCE).

The tragic demise of the two-year-old has deeply affected the residents of Brion, prompting the Town Hall to declare two days of official mourning with a scheduled minute’s silence on Friday.

Experts emphasize the rapid heating of vehicles in warm weather and highlight that a child’s body can overheat three to five times faster than an adult’s. Kids and Car Safety charity reports that in the United States, approximately 40 children die annually in hot vehicles, equating to one tragic incident every nine days. Shockingly, 86% of children involved in such incidents are three years old or younger.

Kids and Car Safety stresses the misunderstanding surrounding hot vehicle-related deaths and injuries, noting that over half of these tragedies occur when individuals unknowingly leave children in vehicles, even among the most attentive and caring parents. The charity underscores that such incidents can happen to anyone, regardless of profession or background.
