SpaceX is gearing up to launch its most powerful rocket to date as billionaire Elon Musk sets his sights on missions to the Moon and Mars.
The company is getting ready to conduct the 12th uncrewed test flight of its advanced Starship rocket, a crucial vehicle upgrade that will enable deeper space exploration.
Scheduled just two years before a planned Moon mission, today’s launch will showcase significant enhancements to the rocket’s propulsion system, including a redesign of its 33 Raptor engines for increased thrust and reduced weight.
The upgraded upper-stage Starship is also optimized for long-duration missions, featuring capabilities for ship-to-ship docking, in-space refueling, and improved maneuverability.
Success criteria for future test flights will hinge on the recovery of both the Starship and the Super Heavy booster post-flight, as SpaceX aims to develop reusable spacecraft.
While this launch won’t involve safe landing or retrieval attempts, it will focus on executing various return-flight maneuvers, including controlled landing burns for both vehicles before splashing down at sea.
Elon Musk is gearing up for the launch following a significant stock sale that made SpaceX public. Financial reports show substantial losses for the company, but Musk aims to raise billions through this move, potentially surpassing previous record-holders like Saudi Aramco.
SpaceX’s fundraising efforts will support ambitious projects to establish human presence on the Moon and Mars, aligning with Musk’s vision of interplanetary colonization to safeguard against existential threats.
The upcoming launch from SpaceX’s Starbase facilities in Texas will feature the towering Starship spacecraft and its Super Heavy booster, standing over 124m tall and weighing approximately 5,000 metric tonnes, surpassing the size of Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower.
Equipped with new features tailored for future missions, the Starship V3’s debut flight will be broadcast live on various platforms, including the Mirror website, SpaceX’s website, and official channels like X page and YouTube.
The event will be streamed approximately 45 minutes before the scheduled 5:30pm local time (11:30pm BST) lift-off time, giving audiences worldwide a front-row seat to witness this historic moment in space exploration.
