A young boy experienced intense discomfort akin to being burned alive when a hazardous plant in the UK caused severe blisters on his chest.

Jesse May, accompanied by his mother Kara May, was engaged in outdoor play with a friend during a caravan trip in Maidstone, Kent. The boys, enjoying the warm weather, had removed their shirts and were playfully wielding the plant as if it were an axe.

Upon returning to their temporary residence, Jesse complained of an unusual sensation in his chest. Despite initial checks revealing nothing on his skin, the following morning revealed his chest covered in blistering sores. Concerned, Kara sought medical advice, where it was revealed that the plant responsible was giant hogweed, known for inducing severe burns upon contact with skin exposed to sunlight.

Reflecting on the incident two years later, Kara emphasizes the risks associated with the plant, as Jesse, now eight, bears a significant scar on his chest as a lasting reminder of the encounter.

Detailing the ordeal, Kara recounts Jesse awakening with blister-covered skin extending from his chest to his belly, describing a sensation of burning. The severity of the burns, characterized by pus-filled blisters, was attributed to contact with the plant, prompting a warning to others about its dangers.

Despite the scar gradually fading, Jesse’s skin remains permanently damaged, necessitating sun protection measures to prevent further harm. Kara highlights the resemblance of giant hogweed to harmless cow parsley, urging caution and immediate washing of any exposed skin to prevent potential burns.

As Kara continues to advocate for awareness of giant hogweed’s hazards, she stresses the importance of prompt action following contact with the plant to mitigate the risk of severe burns and long-term skin damage.
