An easyJet traveler, who was drinking vodka, claimed ignorance when he directed a derogatory term towards a bisexual cabin crew member, stating it was not offensive in modern times. Sean Falvey, aged 59, consumed duty-free alcohol on a flight from Barcelona to Manchester before being instructed to fasten his seat belt as the plane descended. During the interaction with the flight attendant, Falvey, hailing from Chadderton in Oldham, made inappropriate remarks.

He denied any racist or homophobic intentions when questioned by authorities, but his behavior continued to be disruptive and offensive. The crew member, who identified as bisexual, described the incident as homophobic and expressed disappointment at being subjected to such abuse. Falvey, receiving benefits like Universal Credit and PIP, admitted to being intoxicated on the flight and engaging in threatening behavior.

During the court hearing at Tameside Magistrates Court, Falvey was found guilty and ordered to compensate the staff member, pay fines, costs, and a surcharge. The incident occurred on September 9, with Falvey returning from Spain with his partner. Police were alerted due to his aggressive behavior towards the cabin crew, which escalated as he became intoxicated and verbally abusive.

Falvey’s solicitor acknowledged his remorse and embarrassment over the incident, stating that he did not realize the homophobic implications of his words. Despite Falvey’s claim of unawareness, the court deemed the incident as serious, highlighting the harm caused by his actions. The court emphasized the severity of the situation by ordering compensation for the staff member who endured the abuse.
