A new case of meningitis has been confirmed in a young student at Westwood Farm Junior School in Reading. This marks the fourth case in the recent outbreak that resulted in the tragic death of another student, Lewis Waters, from The Henley College in Oxfordshire.

The infected individuals, including two students from Reading Blue Coat School and Highdown Secondary School and Sixth Form Centre, are receiving treatment for Meningitis B (MenB). Dr. Rachel Mearkle, a health protection consultant at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), stated that the latest case is connected to the same social network as previous cases, where preventive measures like antibiotic treatment have been put in place.

The affected student from Westwood Farm Junior School, whose age remains undisclosed, is currently in recovery. Dr. Mearkle assured the public that the risk of further spread is low, emphasizing that this case is unrelated to incidents in Kent or Dorset.

Tragically, Lewis Waters, a sixth form pupil, succumbed to sepsis after battling meningitis. His father, Sean Waters, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Lewis as a humorous, sociable individual who cherished his family and friends.

These recent meningitis cases in Reading follow a significant outbreak in Kent that claimed the lives of two individuals, including 18-year-old student Juliette Kenny. The swift onset of symptoms led to her untimely demise. Juliette’s father, Michael Kenny, remembered her as a vibrant and healthy young woman before the outbreak.

Meningitis poses a risk to individuals of all ages, but young children, teenagers, and university students are particularly vulnerable due to close interactions in educational settings. Recognizing symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, and a non-fading rash is crucial for prompt diagnosis and treatment.
