A woman terminated her relationship with her abusive boyfriend after enduring six years of torment, including instances where he threw lit cigarettes at her while she was pregnant. Darren Duthie, the perpetrator, had been in a relationship with the woman since 2020 before turning controlling and violent. He escalated his abuse by threatening her with petrol bombings, knife attacks, and grave desecration over the years.

Despite being imprisoned for domestic abuse in March 2024, Duthie continued to harass the woman using illegal means, sending threatening messages from his cell. Fearing for her safety upon his impending release, the woman received a threat-to-life warning from Edinburgh Police and decided to flee the country with her children, relocating to Manchester to escape his reach.

Even with a restraining order in place, Duthie persisted in trying to contact the woman through various means, including fake social media accounts and threatening messages. His relentless behavior culminated in a violent incident where he shouted outside the woman’s residence and later sent a disturbing message hinting at harm.

In court, the woman bravely shared her harrowing experiences of enduring years of abuse, vandalism, and threats at the hands of Duthie. She expressed her deep concern for her children’s safety and criticized the justice system for failing to protect them. Despite Duthie denying the charges, the presiding judge condemned his actions as a pattern of persistent abuse and sentenced him to a 10-year term, emphasizing the serious nature of his offenses.

The judge highlighted the danger Duthie poses to society and stressed the need for accountability and rehabilitation. Duthie’s sentence includes a significant prison term and an extended license period, with conditions for his release subject to review by the Parole Board. The court decision underscored the severity of the crimes committed by Duthie and the lasting impact on the victim and her family.
