A former high school wrestler, identified as 17-year-old Cain Clark, was involved in a tragic shooting incident at a mosque in California. The attack, carried out by Clark and another suspect, resulted in the death of three individuals outside the Islamic Center of San Diego. Both suspects were later found deceased in a BMW near the mosque, with self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Clark, who had showcased his wrestling achievements through photos with medals, was reportedly associated with hate speech and anti-Islamic sentiments linked to the attack. Although he had wrestled at Madison High School, he was not attending as a student during the 2024-25 season but was enrolled in virtual classes and set to graduate this month.

After a concerned mother reported a “runaway juvenile” believed to be suicidal and missing weapons and a car, the San Diego Police initiated an investigation. A shotgun bearing an “SS” sticker, referencing the Nazi Schutzstaffel, was discovered near the crime scene. The mother also mentioned her son and another individual dressed in camouflage, but it remains uncertain if the missing teenager was one of the suspects.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl labeled the incident a hate crime, promising further details on the circumstances leading to the attack. The mother’s alertness and provision of crucial information were highlighted by Wahl, who mentioned the presence of hate rhetoric in the case.

Among the victims was Amin Abdullah, a security guard at the Islamic Center of San Diego, hailed as a hero for his actions during the attack. Parents of children at the center praised Abdullah for his bravery in protecting them. Wahl commended the security guard for saving lives and noted the quick police response that prevented further casualties.

The Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego County, also houses the Al Rashid School offering educational programs in Arabic, Islamic studies, and the Quran for students aged five and above.
