A survivor of hantavirus shared her harrowing experience of battling the illness that left her with a lasting phobia. Shaina Montiel, 38, contracted hantavirus more than three decades ago, during a time when the condition was exceptionally rare. It took multiple medical professionals to identify the virus after Shaina started experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting and rectal hemorrhaging at the age of five.

Hailing from a Los Angeles suburb in California, Shaina was diagnosed with the hemorrhagic strain of hantavirus, distinct from the strain found on the MV Hondius cruise ship. Following a prolonged hospital stay and numerous tests for other conditions like meningitis and leukemia, she was finally diagnosed with hantavirus. The excruciating pain she endured made even the slightest touch unbearable, and she underwent two years of monitoring post-recovery due to the unfamiliarity of the illness at that time.

Having lived for over three decades without encountering another hantavirus case, Shaina, now a special education teacher, recounted the traumatic ordeal she faced as a child. She vividly remembered the flu-like symptoms, uncontrollable rectal hemorrhaging, and the rarity of her case which prompted doctors to extensively document her journey. Witnessing another survivor on television recently was the first time Shaina had seen someone else who had battled the same illness.

In 1993, Shaina fell ill with what initially appeared to be the flu. Despite being initially misdiagnosed, her condition worsened rapidly, leading to severe hemorrhaging. A doctor who had just attended a seminar on hantavirus identified her symptoms, and she was promptly diagnosed at a children’s hospital. Although the source of her infection remained uncertain, it was suspected to be from exposure to animal feces in her rural backyard.

Following her recovery, Shaina underwent two years of close monitoring to watch for any long-term effects on her kidneys or vision. While she did not experience any lasting physical repercussions, she developed health anxiety and a fear of vomiting that persisted into adulthood. Grateful for her survival, Shaina decided to speak out about her experience with hantavirus, particularly highlighting the human-to-human transmission aspect that she was unaware of during her own ordeal.

Reflecting on the recent attention hantavirus has received, Shaina expressed her hope that others do not have to endure the same suffering she went through. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the illness and offered her support to those currently battling hantavirus, acknowledging the fear and uncertainty that come with such a rare and potentially life-threatening condition.
