A man from the UK has been taken into custody in connection with the suspected planned killing of an individual associated with an Iraqi cartel on the popular Thai island of Phuket.

The individual, identified as Amir, aged 33, allegedly provided firearms to a Colombian individual named Fernando Estaid Guevara Sanchez, 39, who reportedly shot Ameer Mundher Mahmood, a 24-year-old from Sweden, in a public area on February 7. Fernando was apprehended on charges including premeditated murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition without authorization, and carrying a firearm in a public place without valid reason.

Law enforcement authorities later pinpointed the British national as the alleged supplier of weapons for the targeted attack on Ameer while he was attending to his motorcycle outside a hotel. The police traced the Brit to an upscale apartment in the well-known coastal town of Pattaya.

Upon his arrest, Amir faced charges related to facilitating premeditated murder and possessing and carrying firearms in a public space without permission. In a video, he verified his identity before authorities discovered a knife and two phones near his sleeping area.

Amir denied involvement in the crime, stating he had no knowledge of firearms and that the items found were innocuous. However, police described him as uncooperative and detained him. The authorities indicated that the killing stemmed from a conflict within an international drug cartel, causing disturbance in a public area frequented by tourists.

Further investigations revealed that the incident was not a personal altercation but a contract hit orchestrated within a significant overseas drug cartel. Amir was identified as a pivotal figure in coordinating and supplying guns to the Colombian gunman for the assassination.

Authorities reported that Amir had been residing discreetly in Pattaya for several months. During a search of his rented residence, law enforcement confiscated several items believed to be connected to the case.

Lieutenant General Chaowanasai stated that Amir refuted all accusations during initial interrogation and was transferred for legal procedures and continued probing into other members of the cross-border network.

Previously released CCTV footage captured the suspected Colombian perpetrator, Fernando, approaching the victim and firing multiple shots. Ameer succumbed to severe injuries, including a gunshot wound, at Patong Hospital. The crime scene displayed bloodstains and bullet casings.

Security cameras allegedly recorded Fernando swiftly returning to his lodging near Phuket International Airport. He was apprehended at the hotel on charges similar to those of premeditated murder and unlawful possession of firearms.

Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum from the Phuket police disclosed that Fernando arrived on the island on January 7 and was scheduled to depart via Qatar Airways flight QR843 on February 8, a day following the alleged contract killing.

Authorities believed that the suspect was hired from abroad to carry out the murder while the victim was in Phuket.
