The family of a beloved grandmother who tragically lost her life in a collision with a drugged-up e-biker expressed their outrage as the perpetrator was sentenced and criticized for abandoning her at the scene. Gloria Stephenson, 86, a mother of four, was struck by 19-year-old Billy Stokoe while crossing a street close to her residence.

During the trial at Newcastle Crown Court, it was revealed that Stokoe, who was distracted by his mobile phone, failed to brake in time, leading to the fatal accident. Following a day of reckless riding through traffic, Stokoe’s e-bike collided with Gloria, resulting in her immediate death. He then fled the scene on his high-powered e-bike.

Gloria, a widow who had endured the loss of three husbands to cancer, was a grandmother to thirteen and a great-grandmother to five. Her family shared that she had been walking her daughter’s dog and had plans for an upcoming vacation with friends.

Described as an exceptional mother who dedicated her life to her family and community, Gloria was well-known for her bravery, once deterring fly tippers by bluffing them with her phone’s camera, even though she couldn’t operate it.

In stark contrast, Stokoe showed selfishness and lack of remorse after the incident, requesting changes to his bail to attend events while Gloria’s family mourned her passing and arranged her funeral. Julie Francis and Janine Murphy, Gloria’s daughters, expressed their anger towards Stokoe’s insensitivity and lack of accountability.

Stressing the need for justice and accountability, Julie emphasized that Stokoe’s actions were inexcusable, and he should face a lengthy prison sentence to set a precedent. Janine recalled her mother’s vibrant spirit and lamented the untimely loss, highlighting Gloria’s planned holiday and zest for life.

Gloria’s legacy as a determined and caring woman who overcame challenges to achieve success was recounted by her daughters, who cherished the memories of time spent with their loving mother and grandmother. Despite the profound grief, they hope that the conclusion of the legal process will offer some closure as they continue to cope with the tragic loss.
