Amid discussions about potential contenders for the Labour leadership, a new name has emerged that could surprise many voters. Al Carns, a relatively recent figure in Westminster, delivered his debut speech in the summer of 2024. Despite his limited parliamentary experience, the 46-year-old, a father of three, has led an intriguing life, navigating perilous situations during his military service before embarking on a left-wing political journey.

While Angela Rayner, Wes Streeting, and Andy Burnham are seen as strong contenders, should Keir Starmer step down, some believe that the Scottish Carns could present a robust challenge as the Labour leader, posing a significant threat to the Conservative Party.

Speculation arose from a parliamentary source indicating that Carns might enter the leadership race if it were triggered, stating, “Al Carns has mentioned that he is focused on his duties, but if the competition commences, he is prepared to face it head-on.”

Who exactly is this unexpected ‘dark horse’ within the party causing concern among opponents?

In contrast to many traditional politicians, Carns did not start his career in corporate sectors. Joining the military at 19, he embarked on a distinguished 24-year tenure that encompassed multiple tours in Afghanistan. Reflecting on this pivotal decision in November 2025, Carns shared, “Coming from a tough, working-class background, my options were limited, so I chose the challenging path of the marines over working on oil rigs.”

Hailing from a council estate in Aberdeen, Carns emphasized the invaluable skills acquired during his military service, recounting numerous life-threatening encounters, including being shot at and narrowly escaping a ship propeller mishap in the Gulf.

Recognized for his bravery with honors such as the Military Cross and an OBE, Carns transitioned to politics in 2024, contesting as a Labour candidate in the general election. His decision to switch allegiances from Conservative to Labour surprised acquaintances. In an interview with The Independent, Carns explained, “Labour administrations have consistently prioritized defense funding more than the Conservatives. My experience working closely with defense secretaries gives me the practical insight to implement strategic plans effectively.”

Elected as MP for Birmingham Selly Oak, Carns has advocated for security measures, stressing the importance of tangible actions over rhetoric in a recent publication for the New Statesman. His leadership style aims to provide comprehensive security encompassing military, economic, and community aspects for hardworking individuals seeking stability in the UK.

Carns’ stance on foreign policy and social issues, including border security, employment rights, LGBT+ rights, and housing regulations, aligns with his commitment to safeguarding citizens’ interests. Notably, he has supported initiatives for terminally ill patients to access assisted dying.

In a remarkable feat, Carns and a team of veterans set a new record for the fastest ascent of Everest without prior acclimatization, completing the climb in just five days. Despite facing challenges such as avalanches and encountering deceased climbers along the route, Carns underscored the mission’s goal of promoting positive perceptions of veterans and raising funds for charitable causes.

While lauded for his decisive demeanor and capabilities, questions remain about Carns’ policy perspectives on critical national issues beyond his military background. Some within the Labour Party have raised concerns about his suitability to address pressing matters like healthcare, childcare, and climate change, beyond his military expertise.
