A cancer specialist from the United States has disclosed that he is the American traveler who contracted hantavirus while aboard the Hondius cruise ship, which has been plagued with issues. Dr. Stephen Kornfeld, who was vacationing on the vessel, tested positive for the infection, displaying symptoms such as fever, extreme fatigue, and muscle weakness. In his first public statement since the incident, he expressed feeling excellent and healthy.
Currently isolated in a secured hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, the doctor believes he acquired the virus while assisting ill passengers after the ship’s physician became unwell. Despite his faintly positive test result in early May, Dr. Kornfeld remains optimistic about his recovery. Describing his quarantine experience, he emphasized the stringent containment measures in place to prevent any potential spread of the virus from the facility.
Reflecting on his symptoms, Dr. Kornfeld mentioned experiencing flu-like symptoms, including night sweats, chills, mild respiratory issues, and prolonged fatigue. While the respiratory symptoms improved quickly, the fatigue persisted for over two weeks. He highlighted the professionalism of the medical staff at the hospital who wear full protective gear during interactions.
Passengers suspected of carrying the virus, which is transmitted by rodents, are advised to quarantine for 42 days, as per the World Health Organization. Tragically, three individuals have succumbed to the virus, including an elderly Dutch man and a German woman. In the UK, 22 individuals are under quarantine at Arrowe Park Hospital, with reports of a French woman in critical condition relying on life support due to the virus. Additionally, a British man in a South African hospital is said to be gradually improving but remains unwell.
