French officials have taken action on the Ambition cruise ship after numerous passengers fell sick with a stomach bug during its journey from Belfast and Liverpool to France and Spain. The incident occurred following a recent hantavirus outbreak on another cruise ship that led to fatalities and a global health warning. However, authorities have emphasized that there is no direct link between the two events.
The Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, had to halt disembarkation in Bordeaux as 48 passengers and one crew member showed symptoms of gastrointestinal illness. The ship was midway through its two-week voyage when the situation unfolded, with cases escalating after passengers boarded in Liverpool on May 9.
In response to the outbreak, local authorities suspended activities aboard the Ambition and limited its contact with the port of Bordeaux based on the guidance of the regional health agency. Medical teams were dispatched to the ship to assist around 50 individuals experiencing symptoms related to acute digestive problems. Samples from affected passengers are currently under examination at a hospital in Bordeaux.
The recent hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius prompted a coordinated international effort, resulting in hospitalizations and fatalities among passengers in various countries. The situation remains under scrutiny as investigations continue into the confirmed cases and suspected infections associated with the MV Hondius.
