The conviction and life sentence of former lawyer Alex Murdaugh for the murders of his wife and son were overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court. The court ruled unanimously that a county clerk had biased the jury against him, warranting a new trial.

Murdaugh, who was found guilty in March 2023 of killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, in June 2021, had been serving two life sentences for the murders, along with additional sentences for financial crimes. Despite admitting to financial wrongdoing, Murdaugh has consistently denied involvement in the deaths of his family members.

The court found that the county clerk, Rebecca Hill, had interfered with the trial by attempting to sway the jury in favor of a guilty verdict to boost sales of a book she was writing about the case. Hill pleaded guilty to charges of misconduct, obstruction of justice, and perjury.

Murdaugh’s legal team highlighted the lack of physical evidence linking him to the murders, emphasizing the absence of DNA or blood splatter on his person or clothing. Prosecutors contended that the evidence against Murdaugh was substantial, but his lawyers argued that the clerk’s actions had compromised the fairness of the trial.

In their ruling, the justices commended the prosecutors, defense attorneys, and trial judge while attributing the need for a retrial to the actions of the county clerk. They emphasized the importance of a fair trial with an impartial jury free from external influences.
