A man in his twenties has tragically passed away following an incident where a van plunged over a cliff in the Marsden area of South Shields.

Northumbria Police received a call around 6 am on Wednesday regarding a person’s well-being near the A183 Coast Road. Allegedly, a van veered off the road, tumbling over the cliffs onto the beach below, with one individual presumed to be inside.

Later in the day, a spokesperson for the force confirmed that emergency services, along with various partner agencies, conducted a search resulting in the discovery of the body of a man in his twenties. The man’s family has been notified of the unfortunate event.

Authorities are in the process of recovering the vehicle from the scene, mentioning that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s demise. A report is being readied for the coroner’s review.

The North East Ambulance Service responded to the scene, sending a clinical team leader and an ambulance crew. Additionally, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard, and Tynemouth RNLI were present, contributing to what the RNLI described as a “multi-agency call.”

As of 4 pm, a Northumbria Police vehicle was still stationed at the location, according to Chronicle Live’s report.
