A young man who was abducted by his mother at the age of 11 and taken on an off-grid journey across Europe has recently reconnected with her since returning to the UK in 2023. Alex Batty, now 20 years old, has disclosed that he has become a father to a baby girl as he readjusts to a regular lifestyle.

Initially reported missing by his grandmother Susan Caruana in 2017, Alex’s mother and grandfather took him while they were on a vacation in Spain and later relocated to France. Living off-grid, Alex’s mother, Melanie, who was not his legal guardian and was influenced by conspiracy theories, instructed him to discard his passport, leading to a life where he did not attend school.

In a new documentary by the BBC titled “Kidnapped By My Mum,” Alex shares the complete account of his experiences and retraces the path of his movements through Spain and France. Meeting individuals who remembered him and his family, Alex’s grandmother also expresses the distress of not knowing if she would ever see him again.

Reflecting on his years of isolation, which included living in a tent, sporadically eating one meal a day, and engaging in manual labor for income, Alex embarked on retracing his journey to gain a deeper understanding of his mother’s actions and how others perceived their circumstances, expressing concerns about potentially vilifying her.

Acknowledging the complexity of his relationship with his mother and the challenges he faced, Alex admitted to feeling frustrated about the missed opportunities and lack of education. However, interactions with people in various towns and villages in Spain and France have provided him with new perspectives.

Having recently become a father himself, Alex shared that the documentary experience prompted him to reach out to his mother again. During the filming, he confronted individuals he encountered about not seeking help from authorities, discovering that some did alert the authorities in France, but assistance never materialized.

The documentary also sheds light on Melanie’s shift towards embracing anti-government conspiracy theories, leading her to adopt the Sovereign Citizen ideology. Detailing their nomadic lifestyle, the documentary reveals the challenges faced by Alex and his family as they moved from one location to another, eventually settling in a small village in the French Pyrenees before Alex’s decision to leave in 2023.

Departing without notice, Alex left a heartfelt letter for his mother and grandfather before escaping and seeking help. Subsequently, Alex’s story garnered international attention upon his arrival at a local police station and his return to live with his grandmother in Oldham.

The police investigation into the abduction was eventually closed, bringing a sense of relief to Alex after years of uncertainty. While Alex’s mother, Melanie Batty, declined to respond to the allegations presented in the documentary, his grandfather, David Batty, did not provide any comments.

Overall, Alex’s journey of rediscovery and reconciliation with his past highlights the resilience and determination that have guided him towards a new chapter in his life.
