British executives at top companies have witnessed a significant surge in their pay and benefits compared to regular employees over the past year, according to a report by the High Pay Centre. The study reveals that the average CEO of a FTSE 100 company experienced a 15% increase in total compensation to £5.2 million, far outpacing the 4.85% rise seen by most workers.

Andrew Speke, a spokesperson for the High Pay Centre, expressed alarm at the widening pay gap between executives and employees, particularly as real wages stagnate and living standards decline. He criticized the short-term focus of corporate decision-making that prioritizes executive remuneration over broader economic interests.

The research, based on data from 64 of the top 100 companies in the FTSE index, highlights the disparity between executive pay and worker earnings, with CEOs earning a staggering 95 times more on average. Some CEOs, like Linda Z Cook of Harbour Energy, have seen their total compensation triple, reaching nearly £11 million, fueled by substantial salary increases, bonuses, and long-term incentives.

Critics have targeted executives like Ms. Cook for benefiting from geopolitical events such as the Iran war and oil price spikes. Meanwhile, other high-profile CEOs, like Iván Arriagada of Antofagasta and Lord Wolfson of Next, have also enjoyed substantial pay increases, raising concerns about the impact on company performance and employee morale.

Andrew Speke emphasized the importance of addressing the widening pay gaps to mitigate operational and reputational risks for companies. He called for a fair and sustainable approach to corporate compensation that values both executive leadership and the workforce, highlighting the significance of creating a balanced business model for long-term success.
