Queen Camilla hosted a reception at Clarence House to honor cancer-detecting dogs, where she was joined by the brother of the Princess of Wales. James Middleton, known for his love of dogs, warmly greeted Camilla with a kiss on the cheek as they welcomed two specially trained pooches from Medical Detection Dogs.
During the event, the Queen interacted with golden Labradors Jodie and Floren, who are skilled in detecting prostate cancer and bowel disease, respectively. Jodie impressively identified the disease in urine samples, showcasing her abilities. Mr. Middleton, founder of the dog food company Ella & Co, expressed astonishment at the dogs’ training.
Camilla also examined an “electronic nose” designed to mimic the dogs’ diagnostic skills but emphasized the irreplaceable role of nature and the dogs in this field. She expressed a desire for the dogs to return to Clarence House, noting the transformative impact on visitors skeptical of canine medical detection.
In addition to meeting the cancer-detection dogs, the Queen encountered Wolfie, a black Labrador trained to alert his owner to symptoms of Postural Tachycardia Syndrome. Wolfie’s owner shared that he accompanies her on various modes of transport and particularly enjoys double-decker buses.
The demonstration also featured an electronic nose device developed by RealNose.AI, showcasing its cancer-detection capabilities. Despite the technological advancements, the Queen emphasized the indispensable role of dogs in this field and expressed interest in further updates on the progress.
Camilla, the Patron of Medical Detection Dogs since 2014, has witnessed the significant impact of Bio Detection Dogs, including those detecting cancer and Covid-19. Medical Detection Dogs trains canines to detect medical conditions through their keen sense of smell, saving lives through early detection.
The event highlighted the ongoing debate about the use of dogs in medical detection, with Camilla emphasizing the need for continued research and support for these remarkable animals.
