Polanski has issued an apology following inquiries regarding the houseboat’s status as his primary residence in east London. Government guidelines stipulate that individuals may be responsible for council tax on a boat if it serves as their primary abode.
Initially, the Green Party stated that Polanski rented a room elsewhere where council tax was included in the rent and only sporadically stayed on the boat. However, a spokesperson later characterized the situation as an inadvertent error and confirmed that steps were promptly taken to settle any outstanding tax obligations.
The Times recently observed an advertisement for the sale of the boat, with Polanski’s partner mentioning a move to a house and leaving the community. Reports also indicated Polanski’s voter registration at a building near the marina, which doubled as a mailing address.
Tax expert Dan Neidle analyzed Polanski’s circumstances, asserting that if the boat was indeed his primary residence, council tax should have been paid for the specified period. Tory London Assembly member Neil Garratt has filed a formal complaint against Polanski, raising concerns about adherence to tax regulations and transparency.
Polanski has faced criticism for past statements, including a retraction of his claim of being a British Red Cross spokesperson and controversial remarks about hypnotherapy. Despite the controversies, Polanski has expressed regrets and attributed some statements to misunderstandings with journalists.
