An expectant ambulance responder endured a brutal attack from a drug-influenced patient, who reportedly struck her in the stomach and head after being revived from a near-death experience.
Paramedics in Australia faced a distressing situation at a Melbourne hospital when a woman, rescued from a drug overdose, turned violent towards them on the night of May 10.
The ambulance officer, known only as ‘Sally’ from Ambulance Victoria, was assaulted by the patient despite disclosing her pregnancy at 12 weeks. Despite the aggression, she continued treating the assailant for 40 minutes due to a lack of available beds and staff to take over.
Fortunately, both Sally and her unborn child emerged unscathed from the altercation, but Ambulance Victoria acknowledged that such violent incidents are unfortunately not uncommon in their line of work.
Following the incident, Victorian Ambulance Union representative Danny Hill revealed that Sally is now hesitant to return to her duties after the traumatic encounter.
The Melbourne attack occurred shortly after another shocking event where a man was charged with attempted murder for assaulting a paramedic in Victoria while the paramedic was off duty. Ambulance Victoria’s CEO condemned these attacks as “utterly disgraceful” and called for an immediate halt to such violence against emergency responders.
In a concerning trend, the UK also witnessed a surge in assaults on ambulance staff, with over 22,500 incidents of violence, aggression, and abuse reported in the 2024-25 financial year, marking a 15% increase compared to the previous year. This alarming statistic reveals an average of 62 paramedics facing abuse or attacks daily.
