A prison in the UK known as the ‘Monster Mansion,’ housing some of the country’s most infamous criminals, has experienced another fatality. Akiel Flemming, a 35-year-old convicted rapist who targeted university students, passed away at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire. Flemming, originally from Manchester, was sentenced to 16 years for rape, sexual assault, and trespass with intent to commit a sexual offense. His demise on April 22 has prompted investigations by the Prisons and Probations Ombudsman and the Ministry of Justice.
HMP Wakefield, nicknamed ‘Monster Mansion’ due to its high-risk inmate population, has housed notorious offenders like Ian Huntley and Ian Watkins. Robert Maudsley, also known as ‘Hannibal the Cannibal,’ spent years in isolation at the prison for his violent crimes. The facility has a history of housing dangerous individuals, including Harold Shipman, a prolific serial killer, who took his own life in his cell.
Ian Watkins, the former frontman of Lostprophets, was serving a lengthy sentence for child sexual offenses when he tragically lost his life after a violent incident in the prison. Another inmate at Wakefield is Jeremy Bamber, convicted of the brutal murders of his family members. Bamber, who maintains his innocence, faces life imprisonment with a whole-life tariff.
The prison has also held notorious criminals like Levi Bellfield, convicted of several murders, and Reynhard Sinaga, one of the UK’s most notorious rapists. Sinaga, serving a 40-year sentence for numerous sex offenses, was recently moved to HMP Frankland following an attack by fellow inmates at Wakefield.
