A former inmate revealed that the presence of Ghislaine Maxwell in detention has caused discontent among fellow prisoners due to special treatment efforts made for her. Julie Howell, who served time for financial crimes at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, expressed these concerns to a journalist before being relocated to Federal Detention Centre Houston in late July 2025.
According to Howell, resentment towards Maxwell stemmed from the perceived increased security measures and lockdowns triggered by her presence. Many inmates were reportedly upset by her accommodation in a facility meant for non-violent offenders, especially considering the violent nature of human trafficking, which was associated with Maxwell’s alleged actions.
After voicing her opinions to a reporter, Howell faced consequences, including a meeting with the warden and subsequent relocation to a solitary confinement cell without a window before being transferred to a halfway house. She later highlighted the challenges faced by inmates without proper support systems post-release.
Reports indicated that Howell’s communications were deemed disruptive and involved sensitive security information, leading to her reprimand and transfer. Another inmate, speaking anonymously to CNN, also claimed to have been moved to Houston after interacting with a journalist.
Allegations surfaced that Maxwell received preferential treatment in the form of private meal deliveries, custom food options, access to gym and showers, and the company of a service dog. The situation escalated when Maxwell’s meetings led to a lockdown, and warnings were issued against threatening her.
Maxwell, previously held in Florida, was transferred to the Texas facility after cooperating with the Justice Department. Concerns were raised by Epstein’s victims about the circumstances of her relocation and potential clemency discussions. The controversy surrounding the possibility of pardoning Maxwell for providing evidence has sparked bipartisan opposition, with a Congressman labeling the idea as “absolutely outrageous.”
