Local councilors accused of racism are under pressure to resign shortly after being elected for the Reform party. Daniel Devaney, who secured the highest number of votes in his Bradford ward, faced backlash for derogatory comments about Muslims he made in a social media post. Despite initially defending his remarks as a product of frustration, Devaney later expressed regret and offered to step down from his position.

The Mirror reported that Devaney, a former employee of the Navy, Army, and Air Force Institutes, had associations with high-profile figures like Prince Charles in the past. Confronted about his controversial social media activity, Devaney admitted to being at fault and apologized for his offensive statements, while maintaining that he supports his Asian neighbors and aims to contribute positively to his community.

Following scrutiny of his online behavior, Devaney withdrew his candidacy. Susan Hinchcliffe, the former leader of Bradford Council, condemned his pre-election remarks and emphasized the importance of political parties addressing such behaviors.

Another noteworthy case involved Stuart Prior, who won seats in both county and district councils in Essex. His past online posts, including racially charged language, were uncovered in an investigation by the Mirror and anti-racism group HOPE not hate. Despite the revelations, Prior’s election victory contributed to ending the Conservative Party’s long-standing control of Essex county council.

Georgie Laming of HOPE not hate criticized Prior’s racist language and called for his expulsion from the Reform party. However, Prior denied the allegations of writing racist content. In a separate incident, Jay Leslie Cooper, who allegedly downplayed the Holocaust on social media, secured a council seat in Merseyside.

Additionally, Glenn Gibbins, elected to represent Hylton Castle ward on Sunderland City Council, faced suspension pending an investigation into his discriminatory social media posts targeting the Nigerian community. Reform party officials acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and vowed to take appropriate action following a thorough inquiry.

Reform party leaders, including Nigel Farage, reiterated their stance against racism and stated their commitment to upholding ethical standards within the party. The Reform UK party was contacted for further comments on these incidents.
