A courageous police diver was lowered into a river infested with crocodiles to recover a massive 15-foot creature suspected of consuming a missing individual.

Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter, a police official from the Mpumalanga diving unit of the South African police service, was hoisted into the river in the northeastern region of the country.

There are concerns that the human remains found inside the crocodile could belong to Gabriel Batista, a 59-year-old hotel owner who went missing after attempting to cross a flooded low-level bridge in Komatipoort, South Africa.

Mr. Batista’s vehicle was swept over the side of the bridge by strong currents, leading him to exit the car in an effort to reach safety, but he was carried away by the river towards the border with Mozambique where the crocodiles resided.

It remains uncertain whether Gabriel drowned before being preyed upon by a crocodile. The suspected man-eater was eventually eliminated, and investigations are ongoing to confirm if his remains are within other crocodiles in the area.

Gabriel was the well-regarded proprietor of the Border Country Inn and Sports Bar, situated near the frequently flooded river. After days of surveillance, the police took down the crocodile they believed had consumed his body, and further examinations were conducted upon the creature’s removal.

Following the retrieval process, police discovered two severed arms with hands, part of a rib cage, and chest flesh believed to be Gabriel’s. Additionally, a ring possibly belonging to him was found, and DNA tests are underway for verification.

Despite the discovery of several shoes within the crocodile, none were linked to Gabriel. An inn spokesperson described Gabriel as a beloved family man and business owner who was unfortunately swept away while on his way to work.

The bravery of Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter and his team was commended for their efforts in retrieving the suspected crocodile that had consumed Mr. Batista. Through drone surveillance, they identified the specific crocodile they believed had eaten the missing man.

Captain Potgieter stated that their experience with local crocodiles enabled them to pinpoint the culprit, a large crocodile exhibiting signs of recent feeding and unusual behavior, confirming their suspicions.
