A mother is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter following the death of a man who was reportedly struck by her son’s e-motorcycle. The incident occurred as Ed Ashman was walking home from El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California. Ashman, an 81-year-old substitute teacher, sustained critical injuries and tragically passed away about two weeks later.

The e-motorcycle, ridden by Tommi Jo Mejer’s son, allegedly hit Ashman while the young rider was performing stunts outside the school premises. The 14-year-old fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. Prosecutors claim that the mother had been cautioned against allowing her son to unlawfully operate the e-motorcycle prior to the fatal collision.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer condemned the incident, stating that the mother had irresponsibly permitted her underage son to use a dangerous vehicle, leading to a fatal outcome. Mejer initially faced charges including child endangerment and providing false information to authorities. However, the charges were later upgraded to include involuntary manslaughter and other offenses related to the incident.

If convicted on all counts, Mejer could potentially receive a maximum sentence of seven years and eight months in state prison. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to assist with Ashman’s medical and funeral expenses. Ashman, a respected veteran known for his military service and dedication to his family, has been fondly remembered by loved ones and the community.
