FIFA’s head, Gianni Infantino, faced a failed attempt at a public reconciliation gesture between Israeli and Palestinian representatives. Despite his bid for a third term, Infantino’s effort to bring the Palestinian and Israeli delegates together on stage backfired.

Jibril Rajoub, President of the Palestinian Football Federation, refused to stand alongside Israeli FA vice-president Basim Sheikh Suliman during the orchestrated display. Rajoub expressed their ongoing suffering, citing the prolonged conflict in Gaza now entering its third year.

Infantino, set to seek re-election in Morocco, downplayed the incident, emphasizing the need for collaboration to bring hope to the affected children. However, Rajoub declined to participate further after Infantino’s diplomatic endeavor.

The Palestinian FA vice president, Susan Shalabi, echoed Rajoub’s sentiments, condemning the Israeli delegates as representatives of oppression and violence. The incident added to FIFA’s recent controversies under Infantino’s leadership, following his defense of hosting the World Cup in Qatar.

As preparations for the 2026 World Cup in North America progress, the event faced further complications with Iran’s absence at a recent congress in Canada. Amid tensions in the Middle East, Iran’s participation in the tournament remains uncertain, casting doubt on their matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.

Despite the challenges, Infantino reassured that Iran would compete at the World Cup. President Donald Trump expressed support for Infantino’s decision, emphasizing the importance of letting the teams play.
