Claire Freemantle, aged 49, faces charges of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving following a tragic incident where two eight-year-old girls lost their lives after a vehicle crashed into a primary school in Wimbledon, located in south London in July 2023.

She is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, June 16. Commander Charmain Brenyah, who heads the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, expressed, “We have informed the families about this development, and our thoughts and sympathies are with them.”

“The charges stem from a thorough reinvestigation conducted by detectives. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently conducting a separate investigation into the initial inquiry, which we are fully cooperating with.”

“While it is essential for this matter to undergo independent scrutiny, we acknowledge and apologize for any shortcomings in our initial response to the incident and the impact on those involved. We must now allow both the legal proceedings and the independent investigation to proceed. Nevertheless, we are committed to revamping how fatal and serious collisions are investigated within the Roads and Transport Policing Command. This overhaul aims to ensure that our responses to such incidents are more efficient, offering enhanced support and outcomes for the victims and their families.”
