US President Donald Trump has approved Iran’s participation in the upcoming World Cup on American soil. The tournament is set to commence on June 11, with all of Iran’s group stage matches scheduled to be held in the US amidst ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Iran successfully qualified for the 48-team tournament and is slated to compete in Group G against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, and against Egypt in Seattle. Amid tensions between Iran, Israel, and the US, suggestions were made to alter Iran’s fixtures or replace them with Italy, who did not qualify. However, FIFA President Infantino remained firm in ensuring Iran’s participation, promising a successful and celebratory World Cup despite geopolitical strains.
Following Infantino’s affirmation at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, reporters questioned Trump about his thoughts on the matter. Trump expressed support for Iran’s participation, acknowledging Infantino’s stance and emphasizing the importance of letting them play. Despite uncertainties about Iran’s team strength, Trump endorsed their involvement, echoing Infantino’s commitment to inclusivity and unity through sports.
Infantino reiterated his support for Iran’s presence at the World Cup, praising the team’s strength and highlighting the significance of their participation in uniting people. His remarks came after Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj faced entry denial into Canada, leading to Iran being the sole nation absent from the FIFA Congress shortly before the tournament.
Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship spokesperson emphasized the nation’s stance on barring IRGC officials from entry, citing national security and adherence to immigration regulations. With Canada’s designation of IRGC as a terrorist entity, the exclusion of IRGC officials was maintained, resulting in Iran’s absence during the FIFA Congress roll call in Vancouver.
