A recent study has found that individuals who are overweight, but not obese, may be eligible for weight loss injections based on their risk of weight-related health issues. The research, analyzing health data from 200,000 middle-aged individuals in the UK, revealed that some classified as overweight by BMI standards were at a higher risk of complications like cancer and Type 2 diabetes.
While two-thirds of UK adults are considered overweight or obese according to BMI, experts suggest a more thorough evaluation of individual risks is necessary. The NHS currently limits the use of appetite-suppressing injections to the most severely obese and unwell patients.
Researchers from Cambridge University and Queen Mary University of London examined data from the UK Biobank research project, encompassing various health and lifestyle factors. They discovered that a significant number of individuals at high risk were in the overweight category rather than obese, emphasizing the need to consider multiple risk factors beyond BMI.
The study introduced a new predictive tool called Obscore, designed to identify individuals at risk of obesity-related complications. This tool, based on 20 common health measures, demonstrated accuracy in predicting 18 different outcomes associated with obesity.
Professor Nick Wareham, a co-author of the study, emphasized the importance of accurate resource allocation for obesity treatments within the NHS. He highlighted the need for incorporating tools like Obscore to assess both risk level and potential benefits of weight reduction therapies.
Previous research indicated that BMI misclassified a substantial percentage of individuals as obese or overweight. If extrapolated to the UK population, this suggests that approximately five million Britons may have been inaccurately labeled as obese.
The study’s findings contribute to ongoing discussions about improving decision-making processes for weight management interventions, reflecting the evolving landscape of obesity treatment strategies.
